Joe Chappelle's previous television experience includes stints as producer/director on "CSI: Miami," co-executive producer/director on "The Wire" and executive producer/director on "Fringe."

"Chicago Fire" marks Chappelle's first time working under the Wolf Entertainment banner and for NBCUniversal. He directed numerous episodes of the show during the first two seasons, including "Let Her Go," which served as the spin-off pilot for crossover drama "Chicago P.D." and "I Am the Apocalypse," the spin-off pilot for crossover drama "Chicago Med."

Chappelle graduated with a B.A. in political science from George Washington University and received an M.F.A. from Northwestern University's School of Speech. In 1986, he began his production career in Chicago's advertising community, starting on the agency side and then moving to directing full time, winning numerous awards for his commercial work.

His 1994 independent feature "Thieves Quartet" brought him to the attention of Miramax Films, and he subsequently directed three pictures for Dimension Films, the Miramax genre division.
